Marisol Martinez also known as Abuelita, is the overarching protagonist on On My Block. She is portrayed by Peggy Blow.
Character Description
Ruby's grandmother, a cool old lady who believed in RollerWorld and the group finding it. Laid back and a lover of telenovelas, Abuelita is the exact definition of "an oldie but a goodie.”
Throughout the Series
After her room is flooded with water in Chapter One, she moves into Ruby's room. She has multiple religious figurines and sleeps with a CPAP machine, which greatly annoys Ruby.
She later becomes best friends with Jamal
She also became a big associate with the group.
She later died of cancer in season 4.
Physical Appearance
Abuelita was an elderly Latina female with pulled-back black hair, tan skin and brown eyes, and was usually seen wearing baggy flower-patterned dresses with an apron and bedroom slippers. She was usually seen wearing earrings.
Personality
She was sprightly, vibrant and full of life, and may be old, but was still tough, badass and unafraid to embark on a little adventure to get to the truth. She believed in RollerWorld and encourages Jamal to find the money, as she believed he will be the one to uncover it. She enjoyed drama TV shows (Dateline, Bravo) and soap music. Abuelita was also shown to be a great cook and dressmaker, and likes kids (including the fam), but doesn't enjoy being taken advantage of, which is shown when Ruby and Olivia ask her to fix Olivia's disastrous Quinceañera dress and she is offended that they ordered from Etsy instead of just asking her, a woman who has made over a thousand dresses. She was a sweet, tough no-nonsense old woman who spoke in a Mexican accent and appears to be multilingual, but leans towards Spanish as her first language, and loved her family very much.
